5 essential clothing pieces to pack on your next winter getaway

Packing for a winter getaway can feel challenging, since you want to be fully prepared for the cold without wanting to overpack. Trust me, I’m always overpacking! The key is to build a small wardrobe of essential pieces that can easily be mixed and matched, creating numerous suitable outfits throughout your ski weekend, or Christmas vacation.

This article will help you select five versatile items that will keep you warm, comfortable, and looking great throughout your trip, allowing you to focus on enjoying your time away. I think all of these are super important, especially if you’re shooting photos!

High-quality thermal base layer

One of the most important aspects of any winter outfit is the base layer. As the foundation of your outfit, you want to ensure it’s made from either a natural or synthetic blend that wicks away moisture from your skin. This should then keep you warm and dry during any activity you might be doing.

Not only is this piece an essential component for active days, but it can also be worn as a cosy layer under a jumper for evenings spent relaxing by the fire. I always recommend choosing a neutral shade like cream, beige, light grey, tan or taupe, purely because this will go with everything, and one of these shades will suit your skin tone the best.

Versatile merino wool jumper

A merino wool jumper (sweater if you’re American) is a winter packing hero. Since it’s lightweight, naturally odour-resistant, and provides excellent insulation, it’s the perfect addition to any winter outfit. Since it’s fairly compact, it’s also easy to pack one alongside your other necessities.

We recommend wearing one over your base layer on the slopes, or even styling it with a pair of smart trousers for a sophisticated dinner. This range of versatility means it can work for various activities, whether you’re exploring a snowy town, skiing down the slopes, or enjoying an apres-ski drink with your friends. Again, I would recommend this to be a neutral shade that suits your skin tone, as this will allow you to wear it with anything!

Waterproof and windproof jacket

Another crucial aspect of the winter outfit is a waterproof and windproof jacket. This protective outer layer is a vital shield against the elements, keeping you dry from unexpected showers and protected from icy gusts.

As your external layer, it’s a good idea to invest in a high-quality item that’s sure to protect you from wind chill and other adverse weather conditions. Since it’ll be your go-to jacket, I recommend choosing one that’s both functional and stylish. This is a focus piece which means you can go for a bold colour, print, or keep it simple! The choice is yours!

Comfortable and durable boots

Throughout your winter getaway, you’re going to spend a lot of time on your feet. That’s why having good-quality footwear designed for the environment is an absolute must. Look for a pair with good grip and insulation, as this will keep your feet warm and secure while you’re trudging through snow and ice.

You can also wear them as you stroll through a festive market or head back to your chalet! A good, reliable pair of boots will last you for years, perfect for all your future trips. I have a pair that has a faux fur lining inside, which helps keep me warm. If you’re going somewhere snowy though, make sure they’re waterproof as well!

Warm accessories

Sometimes, the simplest items are the most important. A good quality hat, scarf, and pair of gloves are essential for protecting yourself from the cold. These accessories also offer a great way to add a splash of colour to your outfit, and packing these items ensures you’re prepared for whatever the weather throws at you. I tend to personally prefer mittens over gloves as they keep my fingers warmer, but that’s personal preference. Just make sure everything is super warm and cosy! And, when it comes to colour, you can go for a bold red, green, blue… or even a pretty, multicolour plaid!
