TheraSpecs Migraine FL-41 Glasses & Sunglasses Review

Those of you who have followed me for quite some time and check on my health update posts will know that I suffer from migraines regularly. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Dysautonomia, as well as chemical sensitivities, so getting a migraine is often a common thing for me, ranging from 1-4 times per week. I do take Vydura, as Triptans don’t work, but that’s sometimes hit-or-miss. Nurofen Plus can work, but really, the best thing is prevention in the first place.

I had heard about migraine glasses (FL-41 lenses) from a migraine doctor, but I wasn’t overly familiar with them. They have red lenses, just like the glasses that Simon Cowell wears, as I learned that he suffers from migraines from studio lights. The idea behind FL-41 lenses is that they take away the strain from lights, which can trigger migraines, but for me, they also help when I have one, as I can’t be around bright light, as it makes my head pulse and hurt even worse during a migraine.

As I was researching and figuring out the best migraine glasses to get with FL-41 lenses, I came across TheraSpecs. They have a really diverse selection as well, ranging in different strengths, but they also had sunglasses versions, which I didn’t find offered anywhere else! TheraSpecs protect against specific light that may give you trouble, which includes screens, fluorescents, LEDs, flashing lights, harmful blue light, and outdoor sunlight. We all know I spend a lot of time on screens!

I actually ended up ordering a bunch of different pairs from TheraSpecs, in different strengths and colours, to figure out which would be best suited to me, while I was in the United States. Once I received them and realised how beneficial these could be, I reached out to TheraSpecs to ask them if they would like to collaborate with me. So, for full transparency, even though I initially paid for the glasses, this has ended up being a collaboration with the brand because I really wanted to share how helpful they are with any of you who may suffer from migraines! So, let’s get to this review!

TheraSpecs Mariposa FL-Sun Sunglasses Review

These are the Mariposa FL-Sun Sunglasses, and I chose the Ultra Dark + lenses! These are extremely dark, much darker than any sunglasses I have ever seen, and they are polarised too. You cannot wear these while driving; that’s how dark they are. And you basically cannot see anything when you wear them indoors. But outdoors when it’s sunny? They’re perfect! They really darken the light, protect your eyes from the sun, help against migraine pain and provide protection. I’ve been living in these since I got them, especially during this horrific heat wave!

This refined metal frame floats feather-light on your face, combining large lenses for reliable light protection with a barely-there feel.

The Mariposa frames are really cool! They were inspired by the elegance of butterfly wings, which is why I like them! They have adjustable nose pads and spring hinges for a comfortable fit, as everyone’s face shapes are different. As you can see in my close-up photos, they also have decorative temple detailing, and they come in different colours! I chose purple and gold for my sunglasses version as I thought the purple would suit the dark lenses best, and it does!

TheraSpecs Mariposa FL-Pro Extra Glasses Review

These are the strongest FL-41 protection for screens, fluorescents and other artificial light, but also great for moderate or severe light sensitivity, like I have. TheraSpecs are frequently recommended by medical professionals to manage all types of disruptive light. The FL-Pro comes in three different strengths, and these are the middle strength called ‘Extra’, as I figured that would be enough for me. I find these work really well for use on my laptop and when I’m at home, as I was always wearing regular sunglasses indoors to protect my eyes during migraine attacks, but these glasses mean I don’t have to do that! These also give me a Hawaiian vibe! I feel like I just need a flower in my hair and I’m good to go!

Since these lenses are dark red, I thought the red frames with gold hardware would be the perfect combination! The red blends into the lenses and the gold complements, but you can of course choose other colours and silver hardware if you prefer.

Theraspecs also offer other lenses if you don’t need migraine protection. They have Z-Blue, Sleep, Flex, Contrast Hev, and an FL-Blend version, which has more of a purple tone, for milder protection against migraines. So there’s something for most of you, as well as lots of different glasses frames; they don’t just make Mariposa.

So here’s my review of TheraSpecs FL-41 migraine sunglasses and glasses, and if you have any questions, just let me know! The only downside is that these are more of a straight-fit frame, so they do let some light in the sides and underneath, which isn’t ideal for a strong migraine, but I noticed they do also have wraparound styles that let much less light in, so if you’re super sensitive, try one of those! And if none of their frames feel right for you, they offer the option of adding lenses to your own frames, so that might be worth doing if you need extra protection.
