Topshop button front denim skirt with a cropped top and backpack
Growing up in the 90’s was something that I will always remember. Thinking back to the old bands that I loved (Boyzone, S Club 7, Spice Girls, B*Witched, A1, 5ive…) and feeling like boys and sports (namely English football and badminton) were the only thing that was important. Every time I think back to my childhood and life in the 90’s, living and playing outside all the time, I do often have a smile on my face as I remember the good times of it. The only thing that I can say I wasn’t a huge fan of now that I look back though was the clothing! I used to love curtain hairstyles on boys and everyone wore clothes so baggy you could probably make a tent out of them (I’m completely guilty of this), so instead of re-creating a 90’s look with true authenticity and risk looking ridiculous, I’ve done my own 90’s inspired look, but with much more fitting pieces, yet it still reminds me of the past.
As I was a complete tomboy growing up, I never actually used to wear girls clothing, I used to always choose pieces from the boys section, except for my shoes as I had massive platforms like the Spice Girls did, so to tell the complete truth, I never wore skirts. I knew plenty of people who did wear skirts like this though, so I thought re-creating something that I didn’t actually wear was a great idea. I bought this Topshop Button Front Denim Skirt a few months ago when I was at Bristol Fashion Week and I fell in love with it. It’s kind of similar to the brown corduroy version I have, but in denim and it reminds me of the movie Clueless in a way too. I paired it with a Topshop Cropped Sweater in navy as I wanted a sense of casualness to the look and then for the shoes, instead of going for platform wedges, I went with my Topshop Mary-Jane’s in oxblood to tidy it up and inject some colour into my outfit.
Now getting to the accessories, I literally lived with a backpack back in my childhood, taking mine everywhere I went. I used to have one of those inflatable ones until it broke and then I moved over to my trusty EastPak versions which I decorated myself as I got older and had to carry more books around. I got this Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAB Backpack in white a couple of weeks ago on Shopbop as I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I’ve been needing one to take with me on my holiday in a few weeks to St. Ives and I thought the white version would be great. When I wear it I do get a sense of nostalgia and it makes me smile! The white literally goes with everything too! The reason I chose the Mini version of the MAB though was because the larger one would probably overwhelm my frame since I’m quite small and there’s nothing worse than when it looks like a backpack is wearing you. For my jewellery, I finished it with this Jules Smith gold bracelet and my Topshop Evil Eye necklace. What do you think of my 90’s inspired look?

Nice nostalgic look. 🙂 I was at university in the 90s. Hmmm… yes… now I am shuddering at some of the stuff I wore back then. 😉

Super baggy t-shirts and trousers? Lol.
Oh worse… there exists a photo of me taken, on the day I set off for university in 1992, in which I’m wearing a shell suit… LOL
Author
Oh a shell suit!! I never wore one of those, but they looked awesome!!
Yeah, I’ll admit I wore mine often and liked it at the time. Probably an item that needs to stay in the past though. 😉

A very lovely and inspiring way of wearing front buttoned skirt. Like that crop top on you, looks sweet and the white backpack is good for short trips on the town. I also made a post about front buttoned skirts, check it: http://wardrobefocus.com/button-front-skirts-for-spring-2018/
