My St Ives Photo Diary

It’s here! My St. Ives photo diary! I know those of you who were following me on Instagram and Snapchat (@LornaRaindrops) have already seen what it was like in real time with the videos and photos I was posting, but I know a lot of you haven’t seen these photos and there are also quite a lot that I never shared on social media.

I actually had my dream come true when I arrived there. Like I mentioned, I’ve never seen blue sea before in my life, only the brown and dirty seas, so when we arrived at St. Ives and were heading in on the train on the cliff top, looking down at the sea was a miracle. It literally was that aqua blue and green shade that you see in the movies or on holiday in some exotic country. The water was incredibly clear and I even went for a paddle a couple of times, but it was freezing water so that didn’t last long!

Porthminster Beach was actually our second home in the end. We stayed at 27 The Terrace which was a gorgeous boutique B&B and it overlooked the beach, so we ended up spending so much time on it. Not that many people end up hanging on the beach in June so it was great having so much free space to ourselves to mess around in the sand and shoot photos and explore.

Speaking of exploring though, we spent most of our time doing that. We went up the rocks, found limpets and muscles attached to cliffs, we found caves, we found rock pools with crabs, fish and shrimp inside them, we found sea anemone’s, little shells… so many things! There was even a beach area with pebbles and little gemstones to be found! It was amazing. There’s so many high up areas in St. Ives that we spent a lot of time also looking down over at the sea and enjoying the view.

We also went on our boat ride to Seal Island, however, this didn’t quite go to plan for me. As soon as we were on the jetty ready to get into the speedboat to take us to the bigger sea boat, I had reservations. Not only am I extremely afraid of water, but I suffer from vertigo sometimes and I get really unsteady on my feet. As I stepped into the speedboat I knew it probably wasn’t a good idea from the rocking motion, but I persevered and when I got into the big boat, despite losing my balance and wobbling (which scared me), I took a seat and hoped for the best. I would say about 5 minutes into the journey, I started to feel really sick and unsteady. Adam told me I had gone grey and I was feeling dizzy, which just got worse and worse as we carried on and then I actually ended up being sick over the side of the boat. I haven’t felt that kind of nausea or dizziness in a long, long time, if ever before actually, so it was horrible.

I can safely say that I wont be getting on a sea boat ever again. Ever. It’s such a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing the seals. I did manage to get a glimpse of them and Adam got some photos of them, but I didn’t get to study them like I wanted because I felt too ill to even concentrate on anything. The nightmare didn’t end there though as on the way back of the 25 minute journey, after getting into the speedboat to come back ashore, the tide was coming in so the boat couldn’t get in far enough and I had to spend a further 15 minutes rocking on it and waiting. That was one disaster after the other. But, after a couple of hours being on land, I finally felt better and the motion sickness had gone.

Other than the sea sickness experience, the holiday was wonderful. I would definitely go again, and can’t wait to actually next year! I stuck to my same breakfast every morning of bacon, egg and hash brown and Adam was having omelette. We ate at a burger restaurant for dinner once, had salad another time, pizza another day and we also had fish and chips. Well, Adam had fish and chips, I chose a fish cake and chips with some mushy peas. I can’t say I felt extremely well after eating that, but it was yummy! The seagulls definitely became our friends, ha ha! We had sorbet and ice cream every day, we went shopping for shells and Cornish treasures and we even found a little chocolatier exclusive to St. Ives called I should Coco. I’m sad they don’t sell online actually as the chocolate was delicious! All in all, the super long 5 hour train ride each way was worth it!

We shot 3 different outfit sets as well, two dresses and one shorts look, all on the beach, so those will be coming in separate posts soon! My trusty Rebecca Minkoff backpack got me through everything and so did my bum bag/fanny pack! I can definitely say on the one day when the sun wasn’t shining (and burning us!) and it was raining, I looked very European in my rain coat too! Ha ha! So I will leave you with these photos! Be warned though, there are lots!

And apparently, without me knowing it was taken, this is what sea sickness looks like… Which I can now see the funny side of.

Woah… Adam certainly wasn’t joking when he told you you’d gone grey. Still… brave of you to take that seal trip at all. I wouldn’t have even dared to. I’m glad you came away from it with some nice seal pics anyhow. I love that one of the little seal head popping out of the water. 🙂

I always enjoyed the rock pools in Cornwall. As a kid I was a bit of a menace really. I’d be off with my net and little bucket and I’d capture some poor creature and take it to show my parents – I’d then release it back into the rock pool, of course, but I don’t suppose the crabs and fish enjoyed it much.

It’s a lovely collection of photos that you’ve got here. Probably the gull is my favourite though. 😀

He was awesome! I have some funny videos actually of him snapping a food from me! I will show you on Instagram 🙂 I used to actually do that in rock pools when I was a kid too, I’d look for crabs and such, but I always had a bucket with water in it to put them in and then put them back. I love animals and wildlife so much! Thank you for saying I was brave though 🙂 I definitely didn’t feel like it at the time lol!

Oh, I’ll look forward to seeing those videos. 🙂 They’re such characters are seagulls.

Well I’m terrible on boats too so I get what you went through. The first time I went to France with my family I spent the whole of the ferry journey (goodness knows how many hours that was) sat hunched on the deck turning every shade of green! lol

Thanks, Lorna. 🙂 I was only 13 at the time so I didn’t have that much choice in the matter. 😉 Plus, at that point, I didn’t yet know I would get seasick. What a way to find out… lol

I’ve seen stories like this before, but don’t worry, the tight jeans I wear are super elasticated, they don’t even give restriction. I wouldn’t wear them if they did as I’m super fussy with needing to be comfy!

Thanks for showing us these photos; they’re beautifully clear and well composed.

You look really cute and cheeky on that bench. The cuisine looks tasty too; particularly the fish and chips.

The gull has the typical look in his eye. Seagulls are renowned in Australia for their fondness of potato chips, of all weird things, and for the ruthlessness with which they pilfer them. Same there, I expect.

It’s bad news about your tendency to seasickness and that it might prevent you ever enjoying the water. That’s actually a treatable condition, as well as vertigo generally and I don’t mean medication. Assuming there’s nothing actually organically awry with your inner ear, it can be cured with habituation. It’s a matter of finding a safe place to practice and spending some time just turning on the spot for a while each day; barefoot and somewhere you won’t hurt yourself if you fall. This way, you can stop if it gets too much for you, something you can’t do at sea. At first a minute might be all you can manage. Over time you should be able to do it indefinitely with comfort, with or without eyes closed. I can’t guarantee it works for everyone but it has for me and for several other people. It feels pretty good to sit back enjoying the salt air and not joining the ones hanging over the rail.

Thank you so much Travis! I’m really glad you liked the photos! Yes, Seagulls are definitely fond of most human food, they do like to be cheeky with their antics too, but I love them. I think they are magnificent birds despite everyone hating them and calling them vermin. Which I think is so uncalled for. Every animal has its place in this world. I know they steal food, but of course they will. We take their fish and natural foods and they can’t exactly take their pocket money into the shop and buy a sandwich can they like we can!

That’s actually really interesting about the method you just described. I’ve never heard of it before at all, but it’s something I’m going to read up on and try out and see if it works for me! Knowing me I will end up falling into a trash can or something, ha ha.

I’ve been to St Ives a few years ago for a camping trip and I completely agree that there were plenty of places to go high up and look down onto the beautiful sea. I don’t remember it being that blue though but I might have travelled in a different season! Sorry to hear about your vertigo, my mum gets that often too, it’s such a shame you couldn’t enjoy it properly but glad you liked the rest of it. Can’t wait for Newquay now where I’m spending my hen weekend – lovely photos x

It definitely was that intense blue! But I imagine it’s mostly like that in the Summer with the sun shining bright on it. I would guess in the Winter it’s not so blue, but it was amazing! I definitely can’t wait to go back next time! The sea sickness was awful, but luckily I remember more of the amazing holiday than I do of that, which is great! I’m sure you are going to have a great time in Newquay! I’m excited for you! YAY!

Thanks for your comments =) I read & reply every one =)
