Oh My Gosh! I’m Engaged!

adam-lorna-proposal-2016-047

And… Here it is! The exciting news that I have been keeping a secret for a month! I’m engaged!

I honestly still can’t believe it when I type the words ‘I’m engaged’ or especially when say the words ‘my fiance’. For just over 8 years now I have been used to calling Adam ‘my boyfriend’ so the adjustment is taking some time! I know you will want the story about the proposal, how it happened, where it happened, some backstory and of course details about the ring, so here you go.

It was 3rd of July around about 8:30pm on Porthminster Beach in St. Ives during our holiday. Adam and I had decided to go to the beach at sunset to shoot my outfit photos and enjoy a stroll along the sand (you can see the full outfit here). I saw a photographer there taking some photos of the boats and scenery, so I did wonder what he was up to, but while we were walking closer to the edge of the sea, I saw Adam get something out of his bag out the corner of my eye and when I turned around, he was holding a ring box on one knee! He’d hired a photographer from St. Ives without me knowing, so I would have photos of the moment forever and to share with all of you, which I thought was amazing!

Adam gave me a beautiful speech which I have written down, but as it’s personal, it’s not something I want to share publicly with anyone as it’s just between him and I, but let me tell you it was touching. It led into him asking me to marry him and of course I said… Yes! I am in awe of these photos as well because Adam and I rarely have any taken together and he is generally camera shy, so having these to look at and genuinely see how happy we are in each others company just puts a huge smile on my face. Getting to my ring quickly, Adam gave me one that I have been dreaming about since I was a little girl. A princess cut diamond on a platinum band, from Tiffany & Co. I plan on sharing plenty more photos of it with you soon in outfit posts etc. but you can see it in the last photo. It’s stunning!

People have been asking us when we were getting engaged for the best part of the last 6 years actually, but since we have a long distance relationship and we both never follow the rules, doing things our own way, we never felt like it was something we had to do just because the 2 year mark was what everyone else does. Waiting until we both felt ready was good for us and if it took 8 years, it did. We couldn’t be happier. I am truly blessed and lucky everyday to know that I have actually found my soul mate in Adam and there’s not a day that goes by where I’m not thankful or unhappy in my relationship with him. I’m in no way gloating or bragging, as that’s not something I do, I’m just sharing a personal piece of my life with you that I actually never speak about, but it’s one that I live for.

We want to live together after we get married, but finding the money to do that and also finding a good location between both of our cities and families is going to be tough, so our wedding wont be for 2-3 years. This will give us plenty of time to plan and since we only want a small, close family wedding (I wont be turning into a wedding blogger), most of the focus can go on the after thoughts of us spending our life together in a house. I’m genuinely so excited about this new chapter of our lives and I’m grateful to all of you for coming along on the journey with me! I do have a couple of fun posts to come though, one of which is an interview/Q&A with both Adam and myself about our relationship and the engagement so you can get an up close and personal view of it, plus… get to know Adam more! Please do leave me a comment below and let me know your thoughts on our engagement. Lorna xx.

Congratulations Lorna! This is fabulous news and I’m thrilled for the both of you! The images taken to capture the moment are truly beautiful, and it’s obvious how happy you both are. The beach setting must have been the perfect backdrop, and it’s so fitting that you were wearing a white dress! Did you have any inkling that he would propose during your trip? I totally understand why you would want to keep some aspects of your relationship out of the public eye. But thanks for sharing your wonderful news and lovely images with your readers. The black and white ones especially are so timeless and elegant! Oh and I was right in my guess!

I did think you might have already guessed what the secret/surprise was! I’m glad you got it right! I did have a small inkling, yeah. I did think it would be on holiday as I was feeling those vibes about it, but we will have a Q&A together soon so we’re going to answer some questions around it! I’m sure you will love that xx.

Your intuition about the proposal was obviously spot on Lorna! I’m so glad it worked out beautifully. A Q&A session sounds like a great idea! I look forward to seeing that!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I think waiting and going at your own pace is the right thing to do as everyone is different. For some that might be 6 months, 6 years, 10 years etc. I’m sure we will end up finding a lovely place, well I hope so!

Firstly, my warmest congratulations to you both. 😀 This is such a delightful piece of news and I’m so very happy for you. 😀 I wish you and Adam every happiness through all the years ahead.

Secondly, these photographs are gorgeous and it’s so clear for all the world to see that you are both so wonderfully happy together – and especially so in this pivotal moment in your lives. 😀 Though they are all lovely; think the two black and white photos are my favourites of this set. Maybe there’s something that’s intrinsically extra romantic about black and white? 😀

Thirdly, I’m sure that 8 years worked for you because that’s what was supposed to be. 🙂 I’ve never even heard of the 2 year mark being a particular thing anyway… Mind you, I guess that in a long distance relationship 8 years is similar in terms of time spent together to 2 years for a couple who live in the same place. 😀 Though, on the other had, it was at around the 2 year point that my long distance relationship started to break down, 😉 Either way, I believe that different things work for different people and I think it’s lovely that you and Adam have walked the correct path for yourselves.

Fourthly, *huge hugs to you both* !!!!!

Thank you so much, Steven 🙂 That truly means a lot coming from you! *huge hugs back*

It was definitely a beautiful photoshoot and the photographer, Mark, did a fantastic job. The black and white ones are my favourite too. I feel like I look goofy in the smiling one, but I don’t even worry because it shows how naturally happy I am with Adam, which I love 🙂 But black and white definitely does make everything more romantic.

I think 8 years was definitely the right time, I do think 7 would have worked too, but it was better to wait that extra bit longer as we need time to plan about getting a house etc and save money up, boy are they expensive! It’s a shame yours broke down after 2 years, but they do say that it’s a hurdle and if you break that 2 year mark, it’s usually supposed to be good. Maybe that’s where engagement after 2 years comes from? 🙂

      • Steven W
        July 31, 2016 / 10:22 pm

Yes, it was a pity at the time that it broke down – but, then again, it was obviously not meant to be for me and that particular woman. So that’s fine. So be it. 🙂 It was tough only seeing each other at weekends – and I very genuinely feel great admiration for how you and Adam have succeeded where I, and plenty of others, failed. 😀

All the photos here show how naturally happy you are with Adam and equally naturally happy his is with you. 😀 It’s a beautiful set of photos for you to treasure. You’re absolutely entitled to look a bit goofy on your engagement day – and, frankly, on every day afterwards too if you like. It’s so lovely to see such love and happiness shining through these photos. 😀

Thank you so much, Steven! I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you though, that’s such a shame. Many people can’t do long distance as the time apart is too hard, but thankfully, Adam and I appreciate time on our own so we enjoy our time apart and then enjoy our time together, so it works out really well due to our mindsets. You’re definitely not alone though, I only know 1-2 long distance relationships that have worked so far. And I agree! I’m now going to look goofy from here on out, ha ha!

            August 1, 2016 / 5:00 pm

Yes, I appreciate time on my own too – indeed I actually need a certain amount of it to stay sane. 🙂

I’ll look forward to all your future goofy outfit shoots! 😉 😀

Massive congratulations, sweetie!!! Sooooo happy for you & Adam! He’s so clever and romantic having hired a photographer so the moment could be captured. You guys look amazing together & now you’re engaged!!! Look at that happy smile of yours awww! Yaaay! 🙂 Just like you, I remember how weird it was to switch from saying “boyfriend” to “fiance” but the weirdest thing was to introduce him for the very first time as a husband! 😀 Good weird, of course. We did a long distance thing and, thankfully, never felt rushed by family, friends or each other to do anything until the time was right and we were both ready. So when he proposed to me on top of the Empire State I knew not only that the moment was perfect or right, but most importantly that it is my very own “the one” and that I never want to let him go. Once again, so so happy for you both!! Congratulations, hon! <3

Awh, Nadia your story sounds so romantic too 😀 Empire State Building proposal, how cool is that? I think one of Adam’s friends did that this year on their trip to NY, so it’s definitely a sweet thing! How long did you do long distance for before getting engaged? You and your husband always look so happy together, so I’m excited to hear it was long distance before! We definitely are incredibly happy though and appreciate each other so much. I don’t think I could ever do that whole dating thing again! It’s going to be tough for me too to say husband when that time comes, gosh, I can’t imagine it! xx.

Lorna, I am truly happy for you and Adam… wow what a wonderful man to think of having a photographer there for the occasion… what beautiful memories that are captured for you always. Also, I agree with you regarding the pace of a relationship… it’s not ones place to dictate the timeline except for those who are in the relationship. It sounds like the two of you waiting worked out smoothly and I’m sure your marriage will be better for it with all of the patience that was involved!

What a beautiful engagement story Lorna! So sweet of your fiance to hire a photographer to be a part of that moment so you can cherish it forever. I was dating my (now husband) for 7 years prior to engagement, so I know how odd it is to start referring to him as my fiance after calling him a boyfriend for so many years. You wore the most stunning dress for an engagement, I’m absolutely obsessed with the pom trim!

    Wishing you all the best!
