Maybe I’ll Take A Cruise

john_muir_glacier

As you know, I’ve really wanted to be able to travel and see so many different countries and culture, but flying isn’t an option for me at the moment due to my anxiety and health. I’ve been to many places within the UK and I’ve even briefly visited France (the inside of the train station anyway), plus I’ve been to Florence for a few days, but I’m not widely travelled.

I unfortunately found out while on holiday in St. Ives last year that I’m extremely sea sick on smaller boats, which is absolutely awful, but I’ve come to the realisation that I might be able to take a cruise ship! Apparently, as the boat is much, much bigger, ocean cruises are not choppy or rocky if you avoid the harsher weather and areas where oceans meet with each other. Meaning I technically shouldn’t feel sea sick. If that’s the case, count me in!

If I was able to take a cruise, I think that would be a dream holiday all in one! I would absolutely love to explore the Caribbean islands with those crystal blue waters, and maybe even seeing dolphins! How amazing would that be? Have any of you taken a cruise and seen dolphins? I love the fact that you can stop at some ports as well and get off and explore for the day, that would be perfect. I’m not sure if you can do that in the Caribbean, but fingers crossed! If not, just seeing my blue and white surroundings while on board a cruise ship sounds perfect to me.

I was contacted by Titan travel to do some recommendations for some ocean cruising, so I couldn’t be happier to share my ideas with you. I would love to also visit the Greek islands and Italy on a cruise. As you know, I have always wanted to go to Greece. Since it’s not too far from the UK, just like Italy isn’t, I think those two places are actually doable! I’ve been to Italy before, but only the city of Florence as I mentioned, I’ve not been to anywhere coastal, which would be amazing. The fact that I would have a hotel on board the ship, entertainment, restaurants and even shopping is perfect too though, you would never get bored even in the middle of the sea, plus it wouldn’t feel like I was on a boat at all, just like I was in a shopping mall, I hope!

I wont leave out the glaciers either though. I know there are some cruises that you can take where you get to see the glaciers and that would be an absolutely incredible experience, wouldn’t it? Seeing all of those huge, blue and white glaciers from the deck of the boat, looking out onto them. Just wow. I know if you are lucky, sometimes you can see whales while your around that region too.

If I got to experience going on a cruise and it was fine for me, I would be unstoppable. I think Adam and I would save up all our money every couple of years and book a new cruise each time just so we can visit all these different countries and explore them all at once. It sounds like the perfect scenario for the both of us. I really hope this can happen one day and I can sail off on a fancy cruise ship, having the time of my life. Now that I know it might actually be a possibility, I am excited to share it with you. Please do tell me any experiences you have had on cruises or with sea sickness! It would be really helpful.

The Caribbean is so beautiful, you won’t want to leave. I hope you can get on that big ship soon! I’ve been on just one cruise but I can tell they do ride very nicely, the movements while at sea are so small I didn’t pay any attention to it. You will be fine out there. ???

I’ve had one cruise and would love to do more, maybe Australia and New Zealand, my son has done five or six cruises including one that took in Greece, which he said was extremely hot. I’m sure you will have a wonderful time both on board and at the stop off ports. P and O have some super ships to enjoy your chosen cruises.

These all sounds like such lovely trips!! I’ve been to the Caribbean when I was younger (it’s a lot closer & easier to get to if you’re in the states haha!) and it was incredible!! I also loooove Greece.

Hey Lorna, hope you’re well! Cruising is one of my favourite ways to travel and my family and I are really big on it. If you feel sea sick on a boat I wouldn’t worry too much about feeling that way on a cruise ship unless you are very sensitive. The larger the ship you are on, the less motion you will feel and if you are travelling along coast lines, the ocean or sea shouldn’t be too choppy feeling. You also should look into getting a room low on the ship where you will feel less of the rocking motion.
I travelled to Alaska on a cruise from Vancouver a couple of years ago (I know, quite far for you but everyone over looks Alaskan cruises and I would go again and again!) and loved my experience. I went in July and the weather was very warm- I was able to take advantage of the pool on the deck and left my trip with a sunburn. The shopping is often great on cruises and the excursions at port are always exciting too. The only catch is they often take you into complete tourist traps so you kind of miss out on local life. There is usually lots of on-board entertainment too, gyms, spas, theatres and places to eat. You would love it.
However, if you are cruising, I wouldn’t recommend taking a party cruise line. I know that they are popular but to be frank, there are much better on the market.
I think a cruise around Italy or Greece would be wonderful, I was looking at them this past spring but ended up making other plans. Mediterranean cruises are beautiful and totally doable if you only have to hop over the channel to get to the continent!! I would love to cruise around Scotland and/or Great Britain or a Scandinavian cruise. That to me is the absolute dream!
Hope you make it aboard one day, I know how much fun you and Adam would have!

That’s really good to hear actually, thank you for that 🙂 I wouldn’t do a party cruise at all, I would want a cruise which is more suited to mature people, ha ha. Over Scandinavia sounds incredible though, that’s something I would love to do too, plus I’d take all your advice on the getting a lower deck room too 🙂

Lorna, I think a cruise would be a lovely idea… I also used to have a fear of flying and it took a great deal for me get on one… I started getting through it when I had an opportunity to fly to Oregon to see my sister, I was a basket case but I made it through. Then in 2008 when I had to go to Toronto to train for my current job, I flew back and forth on the weekends and gained a peace with flying I never thought I would… it feels good now but it wasn’t easy…

I think a cruise would be a good first step and I also agree the bigger boat may not cause the sea sickness like a smaller boat… Have a great week ahead xox

That’s amazing you managed to get over your flying fear, Launna! That would be great if I could, but I don’t think I’m ready to take that first step on a plane yet, so I think cruising would definitely be the start!

Absolutely and Always yes to glaciers! Seriously one of my favorite things I’ve ever done involved glaciers. It was seriously one of the craziest coolest things I’ve ever done.

This looks so dreamy! Have always wanted to go but never been able to! But oh yes, so dreamy to spend the days at different tropical destinations and eat all one can by night haha. Annoying though with the sea sickness, don’t suffer from it myself but can only imagine how annoying it must be! Xx

Yeah, sea sickness is horrendous, it’s one of the worst feelings I have ever had! That’s what I worry about on cruises, I worry if I get on and feel sick as it starts, I will be stuck for weeks!

Lorna, what a great idea! My husband and I did an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon, so we got to see the city of Seattle a bit before boarding the ship (we live in Canada). I think you will absolutely love a cruise holiday, it’s a fun experience for sure 🙂

Do be careful, I did get a little seasick on one of the days, but that was because the waters were a little rough. A little lay down helped though!

Oh no, that sounds awful that you got sick on one of the days, that’s what worries me so much. I get sea sick so easily with the motion sickness, it’s a huge fear for me 🙁

It’s great to hear that going on a cruise ship is a real possibility for you Lorna! It does seem very tempting, as the cruise ship is luxurious on the inside, with lots of entertaining things to do! The prospect of visiting a few different countries during the cruise also sounds ideal! As you know, I share your fear of flying, so I totally empathise! Hopefully, it will be possible for you to visit Italy and the Greek islands too! I’ve never done anything really adventurous before, like swimming with dolphins, but I’ve heard it’s an unforgettable experience!

    Lots of love Saba xx

It’s a tough one to get over, isn’t it? It’s taking that step, but that’s the actual scary part, lol. It would be so amazing to go on a cruise though and visit all these places!

I’ve got no cruise experiences at all. I do hear people say that sea sickness isn’t an issue on cruises but I don’t have the confidence to put that to the test. If it’s correct then that’s lovely – but if it’s wrong then it would be a hideous experience for me. 🙁 The biggest boats I’ve been on are cross channel ferries and I’ve usually felt at least a bit sickly on those. The first time I was on one I turned bright green – according to my family. Mind you, that was a daytime crossing and we hadn’t got cabins. For all crossings after that we went at night and had cabins – I find I don’t feel so bad if I’m lying down.

Sorry I can’t offer you any really positive anecdotes – but boats and me don’t really mix. Mind you, I used to be OK on my late uncle’s canal narrowboat – but that went at a pretty gentle pace. 😀

We are two of the same, Steven! I’m so sea sick, although I went grey not green, as you know, ha ha. I’m ok on river boats though too, I used to be anyway, as well as rowing boats, but I think that’s because there’s no current or waves in that water, unlike the sea. It’s a huge fear for me that if I get on the boat, I can’t get back off and I’d have to spend weeks being sick all day. Horrible!

      • August 31, 2016 / 9:37 pm

Yes, it’s a pity that there’s no such thing as a day cruise – where people like us could put ourselves to the test as to whether or not we’d be OK. I think trying is really the only way of knowing. :/

Yeah, that would be really good if you could do the day cruise, how cool would that be? I’d like to try that. Taking that leap to going on a ship for a week or more is so risky, I don’t think I could do it at all.

I hope you get to go on a cruise! I get motion sick, but being on a cruise wasn’t too bad 🙂 you can also get things like seabands or other forms of motion sick aids to help 🙂 All of those cruises sound AMAZING! Especially the ones to Italy and Greece! I wish we lived in Europe so we had better access to such amazing and cultural countries. xx

Oh! So it wasn’t too bad for you and you suffer sea sickness, that’s a relief to hear! I haven’t heard of the bands, but I will look into them, thank you so much!

Thanks for your comments =) I read & reply every one =)
