My Interests – The Misconceptions Of Me

Because I’m into fashion, I’ve often come across people who have mistaken me for someone who is shallow or doesn’t have much depth to them, which I think isn’t fair. Sometimes when I’ve mentioned something I’m into (outside of the fashion world) they’re shocked and never expected that of me. This is why I wanted to do this blog post from a more personal point of view, explaining the misconceptions of me. Most of us are not just a once track mind and shallow.

Sure, fashion is a huge part of my life and one that I’ve built my career around. I do get excited when I save up and buy new items, or when I’ve put together a really nice outfit, but that’s only a small percentage of my personality and it’s often the only one you get to see. I can’t say this is the case for every fashion blogger out there, but I’m pretty sure that most would tell you they’re into much more than just fashion though… So, what do I like? I’m actually a huge tomboy at heart with a more masculine brain, I’m a big nerd, and a very deep thinker. Here are 5 things that I’m very into, but my personality traits will come in a separate post for part 2.

Space & Astronomy

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I’m very much into space and astronomy, so much so that I even have apps on my phone which locate the current position of planets, the sun, the moon, constellations, the space station etc and I will regularly go out and look at them, especially if a meteor shower is known or an eclipse. Currently I’m always fascinated by Mars and Venus in the night sky as everyone usually mistakes Venus for the North Star because it’s so bright.

I’ve been learning about space since I was little and have numerous books on it, but my all time favourite thing that I’m truly fascinated by is a Supernova – when a star literally explodes because it’s come to the end of its life span. Sometimes Supernovas are so big they can outshine entire galaxies and give off more energy than our own sun can in its entire lifetime. How amazing is that? The colours that are produced from the gases and energy are truly stunning – I even have a holographic poster on my wall of a supernova and nebula that I got from the science museum years ago.

One of my favourite things to do on a clear night is find somewhere dark and just stare into the night sky and look at the stars. It’s hard if you’re in the city as there’s too much light pollution, but if you’re in the country, what you can see is mesmerising. It makes me feel insignificant and it puts my life into perspective while I wonder what’s out there. I 100% believe in other life on other planets as there’s millions of planets out there. It’s crazy to think there would only be life on ours, so I’m always waiting for that day when I find out where I came from, ha ha. So as you can tell, I’m a huge fan of NASA and space in general. It’s just an addiction of mine!

Gardening, Nature & Animals

Another thing I have come to love, especially in the summertime, is gardening. My mum and I often love to go to the garden centre and pick up some plants for our garden, and often we will get them from the discounted/sick table and nurture them back to health. I love trimming our bushes (the one’s outside, ha ha!) and keeping everything looking pretty so there’s lots of areas for nature. We have plenty of wild flowers which are ideal for the bees and insects, as well as quiet places which are great for other wildlife. Gardening seems to be something that I truly enjoy and I find a lot of calm in it.

Summer is the one season I can never get enough of since it means I can sit outside amongst nature. Ever since I was little I would usually spend all day outside, many hours sat in a tree or a bush, just on my own, connected to nature and I have very fond memories of that. As I’ve grown up, I don’t tend to do that much anymore as I’m always so busy, but I’m making more effort to do it because of how calm and happy I feel when I’m just among nature, relaxing and listening to it.

I’ve mentioned before how much I love animals too, every single animal in the world. I follow a Buddhist way of living and to me, every living thing is as equal as another, so in my mind humans have the same rights as animals and nature. We all work as one unit, and it frustrates me that not everyone shows the same respect to animals as they do to humans, when we are one and the same. I will do everything, including risking my life, to save an animal or help one, and that’s right down to insects too. It’s just the way I am.

Nerdy Movies & Documentaries

I’ve always shared that I’m a huge lover of Marvel and Captain America mostly, but I actually like most ‘nerdy’ things if you can call them that. Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes, action movies and science fiction are things that I really love alongside super heroes. I grew up as quite a tomboy when I was younger, so most things that boys like to watch are what I like to watch as well.

Since I love learning and enjoy knowledge, documentaries are a big part of me too. I like anything on space (obviously) and aliens (or ancient aliens), but I also love archeological shows and things on history. I struggle a bit with wildlife documentaries though as I don’t like to see any get eaten or hurt.

Playing Games

I never used to like to admit it, but I do play games. I always used to think that someone into fashion and has a fashion blog shouldn’t really make it known, but I realised that’s a silly way to look at it. I’ve actually always played games, especially on my phone and I’ve grown up playing Sega, Game Boy, PS1, PS2 etc and I now have an Xbox 1. My favourite game has always been the GTA series and I love playing that online, but driving games are my expertise and I pretty much always win races, ha ha. Forza Horizon 3 is what I’m currently playing, as well as GTA 5, but back in the day I used to love Grand Turismo. I would literally beat anyone who raced me, and I always win Mario Kart too!

Medical Fascination

Growing up with a mum that was a nurse, I’ve been exposed to the medical side of things from a very young age. I enjoy all of the medical shows on TV which include doctors shows, surgery shows, transformation shows etc and I especially love watching surgeries happening. I’m not upset or put off by anything gory like that, I’m actually fascinated to the point that I don’t want to turn away. If I didn’t have such a needle phobia, I would have loved to work in the medical field, but given that I pass out with needles, it’s not possible. When I watch the doctors shows on the TV, I always try and guess or diagnose the problems based on the symptoms and I enjoy learning about new medical discoveries too.

– So these are 5 things that I am interested in outside of fashion and fashion blogging. Did you expect any of them at all? Most people are genuinely surprised that I have such strong interests which are completely different to what I’m known for, so I’d love your opinions. Plus, what are your interests?

Such a love of a lot of interests !
    That’s so cool.
I definitely have to download a app on astronomy too. I would love to learn more about the planets. ☺

This is a wonderful post Lorna! We have things in common, love of Sci Fi and all the great movies. The stars and other planets with life. We can’t be the only ones! Your a very interesting woman. Thanks for sharing these things and by the way, it’s nice that you Justify your paragraphs. You probably noticed that WP recently removed the Justify button. Stupid, so now we have to manually insert the HTML!! This makes any site look clean.

Thanks John! So glad to see someone else interested in the same things that I am!

Regarding the paragraphs, I’m not actually sure what the Justify button is or does? I can’t say I’ve ever used it or knew it existed. I always do the paragraphs on my own and always have done, but I always write in the Visual composer which means the paragraph is the enter key, so I don’t need to put any HTML in. I’m not sure how yours is set out?

      • April 17, 2017 / 5:28 pm

A few weeks back, WordPress removed the button that allowed you to justify an entire post with one click. Justification makes each paragraph into a nice smooth shape instead of being jagged on the right side.

I’m currently watching Star trek – Voyager on the BBC America!

Oh, I had no idea about that button at all, ha ha! I’ve always just made my paragraphs look neat on my own! Well that would have been handy to know about it before, lol!

I quite like Voyager! I was always fascinated mostly by Seven of Nine and her character, and I liked The Doctor. More recently though I’ve been into Enterprise a lot more as I love Data!

          • April 17, 2017 / 5:51 pm

Everyone could use a Mr. Data! I follow Seven (Jeri Ryan) on Instagram. And The Doctor (Robert Picardo) too. 😬

Such a great post! It’s so unfair for anyone to think or assume you to be shallow. Is it mainly just people who actually are shallow themselves who make this assumption?

I already knew about your nerdy side as you’ve mentioned aspects of that before (plus I’m a bit of a nerd myself and so I can detect it in others… LOL). Also nobody who sees your instagram feed could ever doubt your love of animals. 🙂

The one I least expected to see was the games stuff. There are lots of words in that paragraph that I have little to no understanding of. 😀 That’s something that’s totally passed me by in the world. It’s maybe because I don’t consider myself to have very good hand to eye co-ordination that I’ve never had any interest in these. The only game I ever play on my tablet is a snooker game. 🙂

My own main interests are Doctor Who (a total obsession…), photography and cookery/baking. 🙂

I would think probably that is the reason. Either from things being misinterpreted or because I was speaking about something which had no depth to it at the time, or purely because of shallowness in their own being which doesn’t allow for more depth of a person, but either way I agree, it’s unfair for people to make assumptions when they don’t know a person.

Games are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, so I fully get that. I know plenty of people who don’t like them or who never play them, I think it just depends on what calms you or what you feel comfortable doing. I think baking is a great alternative to that though, so that’s great!

I heard the rumour about Kris Marshall being the new Dr. Who! What’s your take on that?

      • April 17, 2017 / 10:29 pm

It seems like quite a strong rumour… I’m sure he’d make a very good job of it but he would be a surprisingly “safe” choice. I think a lot of us were expecting them to do something a bit more radical this time… I’ll miss Peter Capaldi a lot whoever takes over though – he’s my favourite of the new run of Doctors since the show returned in 2005.

Oh wow! You find playing those games to be calming? 😀 That’s interesting. I feel that way about baking. I was up until 3:15am on Friday morning baking my chocolate cake for Easter. 🙂

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out as he’s always been very quirky and energetic, so I could see him being very similar to David Tennant or Matt Smith, with the enthusiasm. It will definitely be interesting if it is him, but it’s always hard getting used to a new Doctor as you have to say by to the old ones!

Yeah, I find gaming very therapeutic and calming. I guess because it takes me out of the real world for a while? It depends on the game though. I very much enjoy the puzzle games or just driving games as that can be very calming. That’s funny you were up so late baking the cake, it shows how passionate you are about it though!

          • April 18, 2017 / 7:54 pm

It also shows that I messed up doing the topping the first time and hard to start that bit again. 😉 Time was running out as I had a train to catch to visit my family later in the morning. LOL

It is such an unfortunate stereotype. I totally agree and feel like I’ve been judged like that too. And I’m thinking hey, I’m an educator for crying out loud and my passion doesn’t make me shallow. Great to know these things about you Lorna, my dads a medical doctor and while I didn’t become one like my sisters, I feel like things in the medical line interest me too. Great to connect on Insta!

This really got me thinking. Never had I assumed you were shallow, yet I would often have that misconception of others who are into fashion.

The thought occurred to me – are you really into fashion or are you more into nice clothes that fit your image? To me the, follower of fashion must have the right label and latest style rather than wear what they like and look good in, to the extent that they can be inappropriately addressed for the occasion – I don’t think that is you

That’s a very good question! I think I am more into really nice clothes that I look good in and feel good in. But I do love trends at the same time, as long as I can incorporate them into my image. Everything always has to be flattering and work for me, so if a trend doesn’t work then I wont go with it. I would say I am definitely into fashion though in the sense that I follow what’s new, I am always checking out the runway collections and everything like that, but I don’t always buy it all. It’s an interest, so I think it’s a combination of both. If that makes sense?

  14. Rachel
    April 22, 2017 / 9:57 pm

Yes – that definitely makes sense. and certainly fits with what I had picked up although the amount of checking the collections was a bit of a surprise. With me “the feel good in” factor (and practicality) is the one that drives what I buy.

Wow Lorna, this post was fascinating to read! I really enjoyed learning about all your interests outside of the fashion world. It’s unfair to assume that a person can’t be interested in lots of things besides fashion. Being interested in fashion doesn’t mean you’re an insensitive or superficial person at all, so it must be frustrating to encounter that attitude! It’s lovely to read an article like this though, which shows the different facets of your personality and the different levels on which you operate. I share your love of superheroes and science-fiction, and as you know I’m obsessed with The X Files!

Thank you for this well-written and thoughtful blog post.
