I’ve done something a little different for a blog post this month – a restaurant review! I got invited to try out the new Thai place called Thaikhun, which is located in Little Southgate in my home City of Bath. There’s a few new restaurants which have opened up there and this one is quite different to most. Thaikhun is pronounced like ‘Tykoon’ and means “your” Thai restaurant. It will instantly transport you across the world to San road! Bursting at the seams with hand picked bric-a-brac, delicious street food and Thai inspired cocktails, Thaikhun is so much more than a restaurant. It has such a wonderful vibe inside, completely different to British restaurants, so it was like a whole new experience for me. If you’re in Bath and you like Thai food, check out my review below. I think you’ll like it!
Thaikhun Atmosphere
As you can see from my photos, the atmosphere is very fancy! They have old TV’s on the wall in a display, lots of little trinkets and ornaments which adorn the walls and ceilings as well, there’s shrines to Buddha and monks, lots of street signs and flags, fences and railings etc. It’s a complete mix of different elements which all come together as one to give you the sense of a Thai or oriental market. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating as well, especially if you have food allergies, and the manager was wonderful, always checking we had everything we needed and that our food was up to standard, as well as explaining about how things are cooked and prepared.
I usually prefer quiet restaurants and less busy decor, but this was a very welcome change and I felt very comfortable sat in a booth at a table for 4, right by the kitchen. You can tell from the photo above that the kitchen is open so you can watch the chefs cooking your food right there, so nothing is hidden at the back. Surprisingly it wasn’t too loud either by the kitchen, so that was great. It made a wonderful afternoon and I would say all in all, Thaikhun has a great atmosphere and makes you feel like you have transported to Thailand, quite literally!
Our Food At Thaikhun
Since there was 4 of us eating there (myself, Adam, my mum, and my dad), I have broken our food down into separate reviews from each of us so it’s from everyone’s point of view, not just my own. I feel like this would make it much more fair since I have multiple food intolerance’s and don’t feel I’m completely equipped to make judgement on most of the dishes, so there’s four food reviews for you, just below! Plus, all the food is completely fresh and made then and there once it’s ordered.
My Review:
Since I actually couldn’t eat any set dishes on the menu due to my intolerance’s, Thaikhun were kind enough to make me up something different which I could eat. I only chose to have chicken breast, a fried egg, and some plain rice, so I knew I would be ok. As far as plain foods go, it was actually very tasty. The chicken breast was cut up into little bite size pieces and it was actually really moist, while the egg was fried to perfection! It was crispy and brown on the white, but the yolk was perfectly runny, just how I like it! The rice was plain, and even though I don’t usually like plain rice, I did with this as it was quite tasty! I would say that now I know a place like this will make me food that I’m ok with, I would definitely go back there! Just keep in mind that my dish isn’t on the menu and had to be specially ordered. For my dessert, I had some mango sorbet and it was absolutely delicious! It tasted just like mango and the consistency was just right! I loved it.
Adam’s Review:
For my meal, I ordered the Chicken Chili Basil Rice Dish, as on paper it sounded right up my street! Upon its arrival (which was super fast!) it was arranged beautifully, which made me want to tuck in straight away! The portion was larger than I expected, and it tasted amazing with just the right amount of spice for a slight kick! The rice came in a separate dish to the main meal, so I could mix what I wanted and wasn’t overwhelmed by too much of it. The chicken breast was cut up small and seasoned lovely (just how I like it), and put on top of a bed of leaves and garnished with the basil. It was just enough to leave me full, but not uncomfortable. A special mention must go to the Vanilla ice-cream which was the perfect way to round off the meal as a dessert though. I would definitely recommend Chicken Chili Basil at Thaikhun to my friends and family and will be sure to visit again soon!
Mum’s Review:
I ordered the King Prawn Pad Thai, but as I can’t have spices, I ordered it just with soy and garlic instead. It was really flavoursome with plenty of prawns as well, so they didn’t skimp out on the ingredients. Thaikhun are very generous with the portions too, which meant I couldn’t eat it all and Lorna’s dad had to finish the rest, but the flavours were absolutely fantastic. I also had a side order of Spring Rolls and have to say they are the best I have ever had. They were light and non greasy, but packed full of flavour at the same time. I definitely recommend those! The atmosphere was lovely and the staff were so friendly and helpful, they made you feel very welcome – I highly recommend Thaikun. Fabio the manager runs it brilliantly! For my dessert, I had Strawberry Ripple and Vanilla ice-cream, which was extremely tasty. I would definitely go there again.
Dad’s Review:
I had the Nua Phad Kra Prao which was a Beef Chili Basil dish. The beef was beautifully presented and stir fried with fresh chili and ‘holy basil’, mixed with green beans and onions, with the rice in a separate bowl. The beef was so tender, tasty and light. One of the best dishes I have had. The flavours from the stir fried beef juices mixed lovely with the peppers and special rice. I also had 2 small Spring Rolls, which was an extra, and that made the perfect dish. Like Lorna’s mum said, they were light, non greasy and very tasty, I can’t fault them. We also had a starter of Prawn Crackers to share and they were a twist on the usual type of Prawn Crackers you can get. They were fried, but they are all drained off which leaves them non greasy, which is ideal. They come with a lovely kick of spices in the crackers, so they’re not plain, but they’re very moreish! I ended up eating quite a few as well as some of everyone’s left overs, which I think vouches for how lovely the food in Thaikhun is! I finished it off with Strawberry Ripple ice cream, which was a nice consistency too, very creamy and a great way to finish the meal. I can safely say I was full at the end of the meal, ha ha.
Here We Are!
In order above, obviously, it’s me, Adam, my mum, and my dad. It’s rare that all 4 of us ever go out for food together, unless it’s my birthday, as we all live separately, so this was a wonderful day and one that I will remember and treasure actually. Everyone enjoyed their food and the atmosphere, I think we were all there for 2 hours! Also, if you liked my outfit that you just got a glimpse of, see below for more details on it as it’s available to buy in Southgate in Bath! I regularly shop there, so if you’re coming in on a train, the Bath Spa train station is actually right inside the town and Southgate is over the road from it, you can’t miss it! It features some of the best high street shops.
My Outfit
(Topshop Denim Jacket, Grey Jeans, Nike Trainers, River Island Top)
My embroidered denim jacket is from Topshop (I did a review of this on The Jeans Blog) and it’s currently available right now! I am in love with it as it has an oversize fit, but it’s unique and pretty with the embroidery. I paired it with my grey skinny jeans and a River Island top, to keep things casual, then finished it off with my Nike Roshe Trainers and my Saint Laurent Nano Sac de Jour. Obviously the bag isn’t available in the high street shops, but everything else is, so check the links above. Since we went for a lunch time meal, I didn’t feel like dressing up glamorous was a wise choice and given the casual vibe of the Thaikhun restaurant, that was the right choice. I’m happy that I went casual! What do you think? I’d love your thoughts on the restaurant and of course my outfit.
All photos are my own and thank you to Thaikhun/Southgate for inviting us to the restaurant!

I know, it was great!
Firstly, your outfit is great! This is another clear win for blue and grey together. 😀 That jacket is winning me over a bit more on the embroidered denim concept – though it might just be that one jacket… I don’t know yet. 😉
The restaurant sounds lovely. It’s so nice of them to make such an effort to cater to your particular needs. Adam’s meal and your dad’s meal sound the best to me but chilli is a favourite flavour of mine anyway. I’ve never been to a Thai restaurant or even had a Thai meal before! But, a few weeks ago, I bought myself a Thai cookery book… I’m working my way up to being able to make something from it… It looks quite complicated and a lot of the ingredients are not so readily available as for the kind of things I usually cook… but I quite like the challenge of having a go. 🙂

Thanks, Steven! I think the grey and blue is a winner too and it’s nice to see you’re coming around to the embroidery too 😀
I find a lot of the stuff can be bought at the Asian food stores if you have one. We have one and it stocks everything! And I thought it was really kind of them to make me special food too, definitely a great gesture!
I have been several times in Asia (Vientnam, China, Laos ..), I love their foods
And in Asian restaurants in France (I live near Paris), the food is different, and I’m still a little disappointed

Hi Lorna, nice to read a blog about food. The restaurant sounds lovely, good to hear the were able to adjust the menu and food for you. I am lactose intolerant myself and I find it comforting when restaurants are considerate.
Cool outfit to go with the Thai restaurant.
