Radio Frequency Skin Tightening
Radiofrequency RF skin tightening is a skin care therapy that helps to reduce the effects of aging. With time, our skin loses elastin fibre and collagen, which results in signs of aging: like wrinkles, fine lines, discoloration, sagging, and loose skin. There’s a lot of hype about this beauty treatment that’s taking the world by storm at the moment, so I thought I would dive into it and give you all more information!
In our busy lives, a lack of proper nutrition and hydration can cause the skin to naturally lose its smooth texture and laxity as well. According to a 2017 study, people usually notice signs of aging at the age of 30 and 40. Experts recommend starting an aging skincare routine at the early age of 20 so that the process of skin aging may be slower, achieving a better result at middle age.
In this guide, I will discuss what RF skin tightening treatment is, its effectiveness and when you should try this therapy, if you’ve been looking into it. I heard about it earlier this year and it does look great!
What is RF Skin Tightening?
Radiofrequency RF skin tightening is a nonsurgical anti-aging skin therapy that helps to improve aging skin. The procedure uses an RF device that delivers low-frequency microcurrent heat to the different layers of skin to promote skin rejuvenation. When the device is applied on the skin, it uses voltage to generate a moderate heat, which is not more than 250 V. This heat converts into thermal energy that penetrates into the deep skin layers of the targeted area. After applying the device for a few seconds on the skin, it boosts collagen production, which results in new cell generation and skin repairing.
Usually, you have two options to start this procedure, such as in-office and at-home. If you are seeking professional help for this treatment then you can go for an in-office option. Several clinics and medspas have their certified dermatologists, surgeons, and practitioners who provide this treatment. Radiofrequency RF skin tightening is safe for all skin types and there are less possibilities of side effects.
Alongside in-office treatment, at-home devices are as effective as you expect from professionals. There are several RF skin tightening devices available on the market, which are also FDA certified. In 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the RF skin tightening devices for skin rejuvenation. These devices are very handy and effective at improving aging skin so that anyone can get firm and youthful skin at home. I always find that treatments from a professional are slightly better, but at home versions can do a really good job. I haven’t yet had this procedure done to confirm though.
How Long Does RF Skin Tightening Last
As I mentioned earlier, RF skin tightening is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure so it has no life long guarantee. But after therapy, with proper diet and skin care, it may last for 2 to 3 years. It also depends on the age you start this therapy. Usually, you can get a better result if you start RF skin tightening treatments immediately after noticing signs of aging. If you start this therapy after a long period of sagging skin, this treatment won’t make any changes.
This therapy wont achieve those magical changes like surgery can, but you can notice significant changes to your skin. As our skin continuously ages over time, we have to deal with aging effects like wrinkles, sagging, discoloration, etc. This treatment can’t stop the process, but it can slow it down and keep your skin looking firmer and younger for longer.
How Does RF Skin Tightening Work
Radiofrequency skin tightening devices utilise a moderate heat for 3 to 4 minutes on the skin so that the skin can release heat shock proteins. According to a 2017 study of National Center of Biotechnology Information NCBI, if you apply an approximate temperature of 46.11°C for a few minutes, it starts releasing heat shock protein from the skin.
This therapy promotes the production of essential nutrients such as collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen is a very essential element for our skin which helps to regenerate new cells and repair damaged skin. Also, elastin fibre helps to keep our skin firm and tight. RF skin tightening therapy usually takes 40 to 60 minutes, according to your goal. During this therapy you can’t feel any pain or discomfort, and 2 or 3 hours after therapy, you can go home or to the workplace.
If you use an at-home RF skin tightening device on your skin, then it will take 4 to 6 minutes for each session, once a week. Also, you have to apply the device constantly for a few weeks. Usually, RF at-home skin tightening devices show results after 3 months of use. Have any of you had experience with this?
How Often Can You Do RF Skin Tightening
According to the FDA, anyone can do RF skin tightening treatments every 3 to 4 weeks. Also, the sessions will depend on your skin type, age and required area. Usually, at an in-office appointment, your provider will examine your skin and take your history and goals into account. After, they will guide you through the whole process and how many sessions you will need for your targeted area. Some signs of aging need more sessions to get better results. It depends on the portion and visibility of fine lines, sagging, and wrinkles.
However, if you purchase an RF skin tightening device for home use, you can also consult your dermatologist for proper instructions. Although it’s safe to use RF skin tightening devices at home anyway. But if you are confused or scared to use it alone, there is always that option to have an expert’s opinion.
Conclusion
Radiofrequency skin tightening is a safe procedure of anti-aging treatment that is non-invasive and painless. It’s the best way to regain firm and tight skin without any needling or scissors. We can’t stop our body clock from turning, but these treatments can make slow the process down.
RF skin tightening utilises low-frequency electromagnetic waves that generate a moderate heat to penetrate our deep skin layers. This advanced technology reduces fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and loose skin, and helps you regain firmness. This procedure is safe and FDA approved, so you can have this treatment by any professionals or purchase any at-home RF skin tightening device.

Ha ha, yeah! I think it’s a different kind of frequency though right? Lol.
I would need to read the technical description of the device to find out what frequencies it uses. RF burns are not good.
