Flattering dress types for all body shapes
In the ever-evolving landscape of British fashion, understanding how to dress for one’s body shape remains a timeless concern. Recent trends, such as the resurgence of belts to define waistlines and the comeback of leopard print statement coats, highlight the industry’s focus on flattering silhouettes.
However, with the average UK woman’s body measurements having changed over the decades – for instance, the average waist size has increased by over six inches since 1951 – selecting the right style for women’s dresses is more crucial than ever.
This article explores four dress types – A-line, wrap, ruched and sheath – that cater to various body shapes, helping women make informed fashion choices, so check out the information below.
Understanding body shapes
Before we take a look at the dress styles, it’s first important to understand different body types. While each person is unique, most women tend to fall into one of the categories below:
- Hourglass – Proportionate hips and shoulders and a naturally defined waistline.
- Pear – Wider hips and thighs, with narrow shoulders, a petite waist, and a small bust.
- Apple – Broader upper body and fuller bust, a less-defined midsection and slimmer legs.
- Rectangle – Straight torso from shoulders to hips, an equal bust, and a less-defined waist.
- Inverted triangle – Broader shoulder versus hips, creating a V-shaped silhouette.
Figuring out your body type will then make it much easier to choose clothing that accentuates your best features. This is so important as the right dress worn on specific body shapes can look incredible, while the opposite of choosing the wrong dress for your body shape can have a really negative impact.
A-Line dresses
A-line dresses are characterised by a fitted bodice that gradually flares out from the waist, creating an ‘A’ shape. This design accentuates your waist while skimming over the hips and thighs, making it versatile for different body types.
Whether in the form of ballgowns or casual skater dresses, A-line silhouettes can enhance curves or create the illusion of them, offering a balanced and flattering appearance. Pairing an A-line dress with a sleek belt further defines your waist, aligning with trends that emphasise waist definition. I personally love these types of dresses as they also remind me of the 1950’s!
Wrap dresses
Wrap dresses (my personal favourite) feature a front closure that wraps around the body, typically tying at the side. Often made from stretchy jersey fabrics and available in vibrant colours or bold prints, they are ideal for holidays, summer events and casual gatherings.
The adjustable tie allows for a customised fit, accentuating the waist and creating an hourglass silhouette. This style is particularly flattering for women with apple or rectangular body shapes, as it adds definition to the waistline, but incredibly flattering on those who already have an hourglass shape as it accentuates it further.
Ruched dresses
Ruched dresses incorporate gathered fabric detailing, creating soft drapery that flatters the figure. This design element can give the appearance of a narrower waistline and divert attention from the stomach area, offering a relaxed and unrestricted fit.
Ruching is suitable for various body types, providing both comfort and style. Opting for ruched dresses in darker hues or subtle prints can enhance the slimming effect, aligning with preferences for versatile and flattering attire. Just make sure the ruching isn’t too much at the waist as it can appear wider.
Sheath dresses
Sheath dresses are fitted, straight-cut garments that closely follow your body’s contours. Popular as office attire, they offer a polished and professional look. This style is flattering for petite women, as the streamlined design can elongate the figure.
The structured nature of sheath dresses provides a defined shape without excessive cling, making them a sophisticated choice for various occasions. Pairing a sheath dress with a tailored blazer and classic pumps can seamlessly transition your look from day to evening wear.
Ultimately, the type of dress that is the most flattering is the one that makes you feel confident and beautiful. While understanding your shape and what works on paper is beneficial, it’s important to embrace your individuality. Experiment with different styles to see what works best for your body; remember, there are guidelines, not clear-cut rules.
