Three Places in Europe to Visit This Summer

Three Places in Europe to Visit This Summer

If you’re dreaming of a European getaway this summer, you’re not alone! As temperatures rise and the days stretch longer, many of us are planning our adventures that blend culture, relaxation, and outdoor exploration. The summer months give you so many opportunities. This year, why not skip the usual tourist traps and dive into three European destinations that offer a little bit of everything — Italy, France, and Croatia?

These countries don’t just promise postcard-worthy views; they deliver immersive experiences, from hiking rugged trails and tasting regional foods to swimming in turquoise waters. Whether you’re a foodie, nature lover or culture enthusiast, here’s why these three countries should top your summer travel list. I’ve already been to two of them and desperately want to go back, so check out my top three choices below!

1. Hiking Through Hidden Italy

When people think of Italy, iconic cities like Rome or Venice, pasta-laden plates, and stylish piazzas come to mind. But for those who love the great outdoors, Italy is a paradise waiting to be explored on foot. Its dramatic landscapes, from the jagged peaks of the Dolomites to the rolling hills of Tuscany, make it ideal for hiking holidays.

One of the most underrated experiences is hiking along the Alpe-Adria Trail, which starts in the Austrian Alps and winds its way through Slovenia before ending on Italy’s Adriatic Coast. While you don’t need to conquer the full 750km, sections around Trieste offer a unique mix of coastal and alpine scenery without the crowds of more famous trails like Cinque Terre.

Italy hiking tours have grown in popularity lately as so many people have been seeking curated, slower-paced experiences that blend activity with authenticity. Whether you opt for a guided group adventure or a self-guided itinerary with pre-booked accommodation and local support, hiking in Italy offers a perfect balance of challenge and comfort, all fuelled by the unbeatable local cuisine.

Even if you’re not into hiking yourself, but your partner or friends and family are, you can wander around Florence in Tuscany and just admire the beauty that surrounds you. Tuscany truly was one of the most beautiful places I have visited. Especially when you travel up the hidden hills to vineyards and look down at the rolling hills with cute little trees and little chateau houses.

2. Cultural Elegance and Coastal Escapes in France

France needs no introduction, but it’s much more than Paris. This summer, why not explore regions like Provence or the French Riviera, where the pace of life slows down and sensory delights take centre stage. Think lavender fields, local farmers’ markets, rosé wine (if you drink), and sun-drenched villages perched on hillsides.

For those of you that might be seeking a more active escape, France offers plenty of outdoor experiences — from kayaking down the Ardèche River to hiking in the Alps. Even in cosmopolitan cities like Nice or Marseille, beaches and nature are never far away. And with France’s superb rail network, it’s easy to combine culture and coast in one smooth itinerary.

The south of France has been on my bucket list for forever, and I’m definitely planning on heading to this beautiful country this summer. Paris is easy to get to from England, and then travelling around France is really simple, just like it is here in the UK. I can’t wait!

3. Adventure Meets Island Charm in Croatia

Croatia is the kind of place that makes your Instagram feed look like a travel magazine. Trust me! Mine did for a while! The Dalmatian Coast, with its blend of historic cities and island-hopping potential, is one of Europe’s most alluring summer spots. But beyond Dubrovnik’s medieval walls and the crystal-clear Adriatic, Croatia also caters to the adventurous traveller.

National parks like Plitvice Lakes and Krka are famous for their waterfalls and walking trails, while the Paklenica National Park is a hidden gem for hiking and rock climbing. Whether you’re into sailing, snorkelling, or hiking through pine forests, Croatia’s diverse landscapes are surprisingly accessible.

I spent my time in Cavtat, which is just outside of Dubrovnik, and let me tell you, it was a dream come true. I spent so much of my time walking around by myself, soaking up the local culture, enjoying the peace and quiet (with calm insect sounds), and eating all of the food. Croatia holds a place in my heart and I think it will forever! I can’t wait to go back there.

Whether you’re following a mountain trail in Italy, sipping wine or juice in a Provençal vineyard, or diving off a Croatian island, Europe offers no shortage of unforgettable adventures. Just remember: if you’re exploring the great outdoors, staying informed on local regulations and safety guidelines can help you avoid any mishaps. Also be sure to make sure you have up to date vaccines and understand what local animals and wildlife is around you, to avoid anything dangerous. Pack suitable things with you while you hike, like lots of water, flashlights and batteries, a power bank, medical things like a first aid kit, an ankle support brace etc., so you’re safe and well prepared. Where are you planning to go this summer?
