How To Wear A Cape Coat In Autumn

How to wear a cape coat in Autumn

I titled this post a little differently as many people often wonder how to wear capes in the Autumn. Cape coats can be tricky as if you have a bigger chest, they can often overwhelm you and make you look a lot bigger than you are, or there can be way too much material and it swamps you. The key to getting a cape right for Autumn is definitely in the styling, but also in what style cape you choose. For me personally, I love this Topshop Neat Wool Cape in Camel as it has a structured peacoat design and slits for the arms, so it keeps itself neat even when worn. I have this Topshop Cape Coat in Grey too, which you might remember from last Autumn, but I recently purchased this Camel one and love them both.

One of the best ways to wear a cape coat is definitely with knee high heeled boots and jeans. The reason for this is that the boots will elongate your legs, especially if they are a similar colour to your jeans, but they will also give height to your look which is a must have when it comes to capes. You can’t see your figure or body shape properly when you wear a cape, so lengthening the legs is the only sure way to wear a cape. This combination pairing works with all capes too, even the cardigan or fabric style capes. You can definitely opt for a classic heel if you want to as well, but I think boots are definitely more Autumn appropriate and don’t break things up by showing skin on the foot!

As you can see here, I paired my Topshop Cape Coat with my Citizens of Humanity Rocket Jeans and my DUO Knee High Boots (similar here) to create longer looking legs. As my cape hits below my hips, you can’t really see where my legs actually start, so lengthening them like this works wonders. To add a little more brown to my look and keep things within the Autumn colour palette, I chose my Mulberry Lily Bag in Oak as it’s the perfect size and then just some simple gold and cream bracelets with an Olivia Burton watch to finish it off. I also kept things light underneath with a white top, so no attention was taken away from the cape itself.

If you are looking to try out a cape coat yourself for Autumn then I definitely recommend the Topshop Neat Cape. I took mine in size XS and it fits perfectly on my shoulders, which is what you need to look for in a cape, it’s all about the fit on the shoulders as it doesn’t have a fit elsewhere. Since this one has double breasted buttons, it makes it perfect for dressing up and keeping things classy, rather than the usual casual route capes often go down. Just remember to lengthen your legs with jeans and boots and you will be all set! How are you other fashion bloggers planning on wearing capes this Autumn? Please do comment and let me know what you think of my outfit though!

I like this look. 🙂 It’s a very nice start to your autumn photoshoots.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your autumn outfits as the season progresses. As I only started reading your blog around the beginning of this year (late January, maybe) I’ve, so far, seen you do winter, spring and summer but not yet autumn (which everyone knows is absolutely the best season). 🙂

Let me know which ones you like as I’m thinking of recreating some in a different way this time around 🙂

Actually these all surprised me entirely, especially your first choice. I never expected it to be that outfit at all! The 50’s inspired skirt though was one of my favourite posts of all time and I love my Tinkerbell costume, so we agree on that one! But the others are definitely surprising, thanks for choosing the unexpected 😀

I love capes and I loved the wear you wore it, with the very beautiful bag! I also love boots, any length is good, but I do love knee high boots! I think you really look always so beautiful, elegant and perfect! I loved the colors you chose, they are very nice for autumn, a season that I like very much!

You look SO elegant in your camel cape coat. Love that TopShops style! I find I have a hard time wearing that specific brand because it seems to be geared toward more petite women (finally one for them!) but at 5 foot 9 I find that most of their styles do not hit the right places on me, even the coats! I want one so bad, thanks for the inspiring post. Let the hunt begin!
