Why choose professional laser hair removal instead of doing it at home?

Laser hair removal used to be a relatively inaccessible solution to hair growth. Nowadays, however, you can find clinics in most towns, and can even get your hands on at-home devices allowing you to do the entire treatment yourself. I’ve personally been getting laser hair removal done for the past 3 years, and it’s worked so well on my legs! I thought I would share a few tips with you on how to get the best results from it, in my experience.

At-home laser hair removal tools are extremely accessible, but I still believe that it is generally a better idea to go and get your laser hair removal done by a professional. From the importance of the laser hair removal technician’s expertise to the difference in long-term results between at-home and professional laser hair removal, here’s why it’s a good idea to go to a clinic.

Expertise

Unless you have trained and worked as a laser hair removal technician, it’s highly unlikely that you possess the same level of expertise as someone who works in a laser hair removal clinic.

Professional laser hair removal technicians have a lot more experience and are able to alter the equipment, technique, and settings they use based on skin tone, hair colour, hair density, the area that’s being treated, and hair thickness. These are super important to avoid burning your skin and causing damage.

These are often nuanced differences that non-professionals fail to notice, which can result in a less effective and less safe end result. I’ve seen some horror stories online, so it’s definitely a good idea to seek out a top professional from a reputable clinic.

Safety

Laser hair removal tools are relatively safe, but only when used properly. If the skin prep isn’t done properly, or if the settings are just slightly too strong, you can burn your skin and alter its pigmentation – and that’s not even getting into the risk of blinding, should you not use proper eye protection.

Hyperpigmentation, blistering, and burns can be exceptionally painful,  making it uncomfortable to wear clothing and unsafe to go out into the sun. Going to a clinic like LaserHQ means that you’re able to minimise all of these risks, as the technician will know the warning signs to look out for and will be able to suggest clear after-care recommendations.

Difference in results

In most cases, at-home devices will use inferior technologies to the lasers you’ll find in professional clinics. They can still be somewhat effective at reducing future hair growth, but because they’re cheaper and designed to be relatively safe when used by non-professionals, they are a lot less powerful and result in much slower progress.

In professional clinics, the technicians have access to much more powerful machines with more advanced technologies, which can result in faster, safer progress. The laser technologies used by clinics also tend to be more effective at limiting hair regrowth in the future, meaning that you’ll have to attend fewer sessions to get the result you’re hoping to achieve.

I find this to be true as I haven’t had any hair growing back on my legs in over a year now! Some areas are a little bit trickier, especially if your hair is finer or lighter; it doesn’t work as well, even in a professional setting, but on the correct hair type, it’s pretty much permanent in my experience.

Trying to take care of your laser hair removal at home can be effective,  but it is highly unlikely that you will be able to achieve the same results that a professional service would provide. If your priority is to limit hair growth in the long run as quickly and pain-free as possible, then your best bet is to find a local clinic and book yourself in there.

It always astounds me that people will go to professionals for things like electrical work on their home or mechanic for their car but they are willing to give it ago at home for beauty and sometimes health things. Do they care more for inanimate objects than themselves?
