A traveller’s guide to a fashion-focused weekend in Charlotte

Charlotte, North Carolina, is steadily building a strong reputation as a fashion hub in the South. If you want a weekend built around clothes, accessories, shopping districts, and personal style, Charlotte offers plenty to work with. However, the nature of the city does mean that a bit of pre-planning comes in handy.

Charlotte doesn’t have one central and compact fashion district – it’s a very spread-out city, with interesting boutiques and fashion centres dotted across a range of neighbourhoods. In many ways, this makes Charlotte a much more diverse fashion experience than you’d find in more centralised cities, as each neighbourhood has its own unique character. But, in order to get the best out of a fashion-focused weekend in Charlotte, it’s a good idea to have some idea of where you want to go and how you’re going to get there before you start.

Getting around in Charlotte

As mentioned, Charlotte is a sprawling city with limited public transport outside of central areas. It’s also not as walkable as somewhere like New York. So, if you’re planning to make a comprehensive tour of the city’s fashion spots, it’s a good idea to rent a car from Charlotte airport and use that to get around. The good news is that Charlotte is easy to drive around, with no major congestion issues and plenty of parking. Plus, a car gives you lots of room for shopping bags!

If you don’t want to rent a car, you can use rideshares to get to more far-flung places, and public transport in central areas like Uptown. Depending on where you’re staying, you could get away with using rideshares for a couple of days in areas further out and getting the train or bus around Uptown and its surrounding areas.

Uptown

If Charlotte has anything resembling a central hub, it’s Uptown. This is the biggest business and commerce district in the city, and most of the public transport links run through here. It’s a good base if you’re looking for somewhere to stay and don’t mind paying a bit extra for a location close to the action.

Uptown has a clean and polished retail environment. This is where to come if you’re looking for contemporary pieces, smart evening wear, tailored separates, high-end shoes, and dressy accessories. This area is more walkable than much of Charlotte, so you can easily spend an afternoon strolling between designer outlets and department stores, stopping for the occasional bite to eat or lazy lunch at cafes and restaurants along the way.

South End

South End is easy to reach by public transport from Uptown, and only a very short drive if you’re in a car. South End has a looser mix of independent boutiques and up-and-coming labels. It’s still pretty polished, but it doesn’t have the mainstream vibe of Uptown. It’s a bit more independent and unique – definitely a good place to come if you like hunting out unique pieces but prefer to do so in more of an upscale way than thrifting or browsing flea markets.

It’s worth planning out more time than you think you need for South End, as the unique mix of independent stores and newer labels means that you’ll likely spend a long time browsing for new styles and getting inspiration from hot new designers. You’ll also need a decent amount of time for Atherton Mill – a gorgeous, historic area with a huge range of shops, services, and restaurants.

Plaza Midwood

Drive to Plaza Midwood for a more eclectic, individual mix of vintage, independent, and high-end thrift stores. This is a fantastic spot for people who love seeking out vintage pieces and fashion bargains. If you like to find distinctive pieces and build looks around them, you’ll have a field day in Plaza Midwood.

Try to be patient and methodical when shopping at vintage stores. Remember, the art of good vintage fashion shopping is to seek out pieces with staying power, not for novelty purchases. So, check labels, seams, lining, fabrics, fit, and so on before buying anything.

General tips

There are plenty of smaller studios with occasional open days, pop-up fashion spots, fashion shows, and designer showcases in Charlotte, so it’s a good idea to do a bit of googling and work out what’s on while you’re there. That kind of extra effort can really pay off if you want something specific, unique, and tied to your time in the city, rather than something mainstream and mass-distributed.

Think carefully about how you pack – bearing in mind that you’ll want to leave space in your suitcase for all your purchases. If you’re planning to splurge, it might be advisable to book extra bags on the plane for the return flight. Also pack a tote to carry your purchases around – store bags can be flimsy and hard to carry.

Finish the weekend with one final review of what you bought and what you left behind (but that’s maybe nagging at you and deserves a second look). If one store stayed in your mind all weekend, go back there instead of squeezing in a random extra stop. If nothing else stands out, head back to the airport with enough time to repack calmly and keep your purchases organised.

Enjoy your fashion-focused weekend in Charlotte!

Charlotte is an up-and-coming city, and that’s reflected in its fashion culture. Things here feel very young, new, creative, and vibrant – you can get some really unique pieces from new, independent designers and studios here. Charlotte is well worth a visit for anyone interested in the future of fashion and building their own personal style.

Charlotte, NC, here I come! And yes, I’ll have to remember to leave room in my luggage for purchases 😂 I always forget that, lol.

Sounds like a cool place for a shopping trip. A possible stop on a future road trip perhaps? 🤔
