In Defence Of The Clothes Rail

When it comes to storing your outfits, clothes rails have always been a bit of a love-it or hate-it thing. Sure, they look cute on Pinterest, and there’s no denying the appeal of laying your clothes out like that. But, my minimalist heart still leans towards the sleek, hidden-away storage that a traditional wardrobe offers.

But, what if I told you that the modest clothes rails you’ve been snubbing for all of these years have a lot more to offer than you might think? In fact, as we switch towards increasingly stripped-back style choices as a nation, a clothes rail could be just the thing your clothes need.

Keep on reading to find out how you could take your fashion storage to the next level with the help of nothing more than a modest clothes rail. I used to have one before I downsized and they are definitely handy, and even aesthetically pretty if you make a perfect colour palette!

A ready-made style feature

Clothes rails used to be bland, silver, and generally not all that sturdy. Now, though, there are all manner of great rails on the market in a range of different colours, materials, and styles. If you’re handy with your DIY, it’s also entirely possible to make a unique clothes rail according to your design preferences with something as simple as a bit of wood and a few pieces of copper pipe. Either way, your clothes rail no longer needs to look as basic as it might have even ten years ago – you can now turn it into a style feature in its own right. Even better, with clothes rails now appearing all across platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, you can get plenty of ideas as to how you can style this addition with your accessories, clothes, and other gorgeous fashion additions.

The ideal solution for small spaces

Fitting even a modest wardrobe into a tiny room can be a tight squeeze, and may end up using practically all of your floor space. By comparison, clothes rails are a way better space-saving option, as they can collapse, adjust, and generally take up a lot less room. You can also now get clothes rails that incorporate under-rail shelving, and provide space for shoe storage or whatever else you need underneath those shelves. All in all, your clothes rail should take up around half of the space that your wardrobe would. That can make a huge difference for the clothes you already have in your collection. You may also find that it frees you up to buy yet more great fashion items thanks to your ability to fit two or more rails where you would’ve only managed one wardrobe.

An easily accessible option

If you love clothes, then you’re probably all too familiar with the typical struggle of having to take everything out of your drawers or wardrobe shelves when you have a specific outfit in mind. It’s the bain of your life, I know it well, and it may also result in you forgetting about clothes that get lost at the back of the pile. But, there are no piles with a clothes rail. When you install one of these in your home, you’ll be able to glance at your entire clothing collection whenever you fancy. This will be a huge help for outfit planning in the first place. It’ll also mean that, if you intend to wear a certain piece, you’ll easily be able to access it without having to question where it is or go to excessive efforts to retrieve it. As a result, you’ll be able to halve the time it takes to locate your outfits each morning, and could instead use that spare time to focus on accessories, or whatever else you use to elevate each of your looks.

A natural way to de-wrinkle

There’s a lot of talk out there about the fact that millennials don’t iron. Who has the time nowadays? Luckily, many modern clothing fabrics are designed to be wrinkle-free even without the iron’s heat. But even the least wrinkly fabric may end up looking a little worse for wear when you shove it in your drawer, or it falls off the hanger and sits at the bottom of the wardrobe for too long. You’re then left with the choice of either wearing crinkled outfits or cracking out the iron even in your busy lifestyle. Alternatively, this is where a clothes rail comes in handy. By allowing you to hang your clothes directly and in plain view, clothes rails are a great option for the natural de-wrinkling of even notoriously difficult fabrics like linen. Simply make sure that you’re putting those clothes straight out on a washing line or clothes horse when they’re wet, before hanging them on your clothes rail as soon as possible. As simple as that, you’ll have wrinkle-free clothing, with no need for an iron in sight.

An affordable option

It’s also well worth mentioning that even the most elaborate clothes rails tend to be significantly more affordable than any wardrobe. You could save yourself a small fortune by finding a trendy clothes rail instead of something like a real-oak wardrobe. And, you needn’t compromise on space or appearances in the process. Admittedly, you may want to avoid the clothes rails with the lowest price points as these don’t tend to last all that long (trust me, I had some of those and they fell apart and bent). But, if you look at things like maximum holding capability and materials before investing, there’s no reason why your rail can’t last every bit as long as a wardrobe, and for a lot less expense overall.

Takeaway

Clothes rails are an increasingly popular option for a reason, and any fashionista could benefit from considering them as a storage option. Admittedly, you will want to avoid hanging things like real wool items that can stretch over time. But, if you stock up on a high-quality clothes rail complete with shelving space, there’s no reason why this can’t be the ideal solution for all of your clothing storage needs. Simply give it a go, and start enjoying the styling benefits of a clothes rail at last.
