How to Wear Colourful Jewellery Without Overdoing It

How to Wear Colourful Jewellery Without Overdoing It

Colourful pieces of jewellery are one of the easiest ways you can create an entirely different look, without making any changes to your actual outfit. All you have to do is put on a piece of jewellery with gemstones, and your average outfit will automatically be elevated into something brand new and fun. Here are some points for getting the styling right.

1. Choose One Colourful Focal Point

It isn’t necessary to try to incorporate all of your accessories into the outfit at once. It’s sufficient to have one piece that can change everything. A few rings or a couple of necklaces with gemstones are quite capable of transforming your look. Combining several eye-catching and colourful items can only lead to competition between them and not coordination, as every item will divert the attention away from the rest of the things you wear.

2. Allow Neutral Outfits to Complement Jewellery Pieces

Coloured jewellery pieces have their best chance at showing off their full capabilities with a neutral backdrop to work with. Black, white, beige, grey, or even jeans are ideal choices that would give the jewellery the opportunity to stand out without having to compete with the colours or patterns of your clothes. It makes a great base and really dresses it up!

3. Go for Soft Colours For An Everyday Look

Not all occasions will need you to be vibrant! Soft colours like blush pink, pale blue, and light green allow you to inject some colour into your wardrobe without making it look like you have gone really vibrant and bold. Muted tones are ideal for daytime wear or as a way to start wearing colour when the colourful stones are a bit frightening. For example, soft pink gemstone earrings will suit most of your neutral outfits effortlessly, just like lip colour does. But it adds that little something extra!

4. Keep the Rest of Your Jewellery Simple

Since one piece already stands out with its colour, other pieces shouldn’t fight for attention. Minimalist chains, bands, and simple metal jewellery in a solid colour allow the coloured item to maintain the focus, without being overwhelmed by other jewellery pieces. This rule is just an application of the previously mentioned technique where colour was contrasted with neutral clothes. It’s about keeping things simple, yet elevated. Like the dainty chain that I’m wearing – it’s pretty colourful, but simple.

5. Coordinate with Your Wardrobe

Not only should you be guided by the colour when choosing something for yourself, but also by the kind of clothes you have. For instance, if your wardrobe includes warm-toned colours like camel, rust, or cream, then pink, red, yellow, amber, or gold coloured stones would look perfect with your clothes. However, if the colours in your wardrobe are cool – grey, blue, white – then cool tones of stones will match your style. These would be green, blue, silver, purple and grey. This is not a must, but just an option to wear your purchases frequently. It does make a difference when you’re wearing the correct colours for your skin tone.

6. Be Careful When Mixing Colours

A mixed approach using gemstones may be really fun, but requires a little more discipline. Using colours that are in line with each other, on the same side of the colour wheel, or similar tones, shows that you have thought this out carefully. Five random colours, all competing against one another in an outfit, may appear messy and distracting, even if each piece may be beautiful by itself. When in doubt, stick to just two colours, or those that work harmoniously with each other. This is similar to point five above.

7. Adjust the Look for the Occasion

These tips obviously will change according to the environment. The clothing you wear every day is usually a bit more reserved, with only one light or medium bright item of jewellery in the outfit. When it comes to evening dinners, parties and holidays, there will be a bit more freedom to wear more colourful combinations, since we usually wear expressive and fancy items later in the night. Taking into consideration what type of occasion it is and how many colours it requires will definitely make your choice more thoughtful than sticking to a basic plan. It’s always about dressing for the occasion!

In the end, colourful pieces of jewellery look best when they don’t look like the brightest spot in the room. It is exactly what makes all of the above-mentioned habits cohesive: choosing just one colour or several which will match the outfit perfectly, and making sure that everything else around them looks more subtle to allow these colours to pop and pull the outfit together. Elegance is key!
