How to spot the best (and worst) beauty products on Amazon

From skincare staples and makeup must-haves to haircare heroes, there are thousands of beauty products available on Amazon. The sheer volume makes finding the right one a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack. Add to that the mix of trusted brands, private labels, and questionable listings, and it’s easy to see why many of us worry about making the wrong choice.

I personally love shopping on Amazon as it’s so easy when you have Prime! You can receive your item the next day and it’s just so simple! But how can you hone your search to find the beauty buys that are genuinely worth your money? Here are some straightforward tactics to help you spot the best beauty products on Amazon and avoid the worst.

Read product reviews

This might sound simple and obvious, but customer reviews are your first line of defence when trying to assess the quality of a product. I always jump to the reviews immediately! Make sure you’re looking at recent reviews, as reviews older than a year are less likely to reflect the current quality or formulation of the product. Also, look carefully at how ratings are distributed. For example, a product with hundreds of five-star reviews may still have issues if many one-star reviews cite the same problem.

Look for reviews that mention specific benefits or drawbacks, as these tend to be more genuine than vague praise or single-word feedback. And be wary of listings with overly generic or suspiciously positive reviews, particularly if the language seems unnatural or repetitive. It may be worth using a review checker tool to see whether the feedback is likely to be authentic. You have to be a detective with reviews! Some people leave photos in their reviews too and I love that.

Check the product description and ingredients

Before adding anything to your basket, take time to read the product description carefully. Is the product clearly branded? Are ingredients and instructions listed? If a listing is vague, overly brief, or seems to over-promise, that’s a red flag.

For skincare and haircare, scan the ingredients list, especially if you have allergies or sensitive skin. Products that clearly list active ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or retinol, are generally more trustworthy than those that rely on buzzwords without specifics.

If you’re unsure about an ingredient, a quick online search or a visit to a site like INCI Decoder can help you understand what it does and whether it suits your skin type.

Look for “Sold by” and “Dispatched by” information

One detail that’s often overlooked is who’s actually selling and dispatching the product. On Amazon, this is usually listed under the product price.

Ideally, you want the product to be “Sold by [Brand Name] and Fulfilled by Amazon” or at least “Dispatched by Amazon”, which generally ensures faster delivery and better customer service if something goes wrong.

Be cautious with third-party sellers offering extremely low prices on high-end beauty brands, as this can sometimes be a sign of counterfeit goods or expired stock. If in doubt, check the seller’s reviews and ratings. You need to make sure the item you’re buying is authentic and not a fake version of a reputable brand. Fakes can be so dangerous!

Pay attention to product images

A high-quality product listing should include clear, high-resolution images showing the product from different angles. If the images appear pixelated, poorly edited, or generic, it may be a sign that the listing isn’t trustworthy.

Also, avoid listings that lack close-ups of the packaging or ones that don’t show ingredient labels or usage instructions. These details are vital with skincare products.

Use smart keyword searches

Your search terms matter. Instead of typing a general term like “moisturiser,” be more specific: “moisturiser for oily skin with SPF” or “fragrance-free night cream.” This helps filter out irrelevant products and gets you closer to what you’re actually after.

Using filters such as ‘average customer review rating’ or ‘brand’ can also help narrow down the options, especially if you’re short on time.

Explore Amazon’s beauty hubs and categories

Amazon’s Beauty Storefronts and curated collections can be helpful when you’re not sure where to start. These sections often include top-rated, best-selling, and trend-driven picks, making it easier to discover new products vetted by real customers.

You can also use the Subscribe & Save feature for items you buy regularly, which often comes with an extra discount.

Tips for finding the best beauty product deals

Once you’ve found a product you love, there are several ways to make sure you’re getting the best price…

  • Use Amazon’s “Today’s Deals” and “Beauty Bargains” sections to spot limited-time discounts on popular products.
  • Add items to your wishlist or basket, then wait. Amazon often lowers prices to prompt a purchase.
  • Try voice shopping via Alexa-enabled devices, which sometimes unlocks exclusive deals not visible on the main site.
  • Look out for coupon options beneath the price. Ticking the box can sometimes knock a few pounds off at checkout.
  • Consider bundle offers or multi-packs, which often provide better value for money, especially for everyday essentials like cleansers or sheet masks.

Shopping for beauty products on Amazon can be convenient, but it’s important to approach it with a bit of caution and know-how. By reviewing listings carefully, checking sellers, and using smart search strategies, you can avoid disappointing purchases and discover genuine gems. And when it comes to deals, a little patience and savvy searching can go a long way in helping you stock up on your favourites for less.

Great advice! A lot of that can be applied to shopping on Amazon in general. You also need to make sure the reviews are of the actual product listed! I miss the days when everything on Amazon was sold by Amazon and you could trust all the products.
