Channelling a Poetcore Aesthetic with Very.co.uk

I’m back with a brand new collaboration with Very.co.uk! I think this may be my 10th or 11th collaboration with them, and they’re my favourite to work with! I always love the concepts, ideas, and campaigns that they come up with! This campaign is centred around Poetcore. Now I will admit, I had to do a little bit of research as I wasn’t overly familiar with the details of this aesthetic, but it’s one that suits me perfectly!

Similar to my last campaign with Very.co.uk, which was about romantic novel styling with main character book energy, Poetcore is a literary-inspired fashion and lifestyle aesthetic that romanticises the life of an aspiring author or bookworm. It’s a softer, dreamier cousin to the brooding “Dark Academia” aesthetic, moving away from gothic drama and toward sunlit reading rooms, vintage charm, and quiet introspection.

The vibe is cosy, nostalgic, artistic, and intellectual. So you can think of fluid tailoring, oversized turtlenecks, vintage blazers, slouchy cardigans, messenger satchels, berets, midi skirts, tailored trousers, brooches, pleats, loafers and lace accents. So I’m embracing literary-inspired style with effortless layering. It gives me teacher or librarian vibes, but a friend of mine mentioned it looks like it has French poet themes, which I think is true too.

Now that I had the Poetcore aesthetic in mind, picking out every piece of this outfit was so much fun. I love styling and putting looks together; it’s been one of my passions since I was a pre-teen. I knew I wanted my base to be about tailored wide-leg trousers and soft knitwear, as this was a core component of my vision.

I chose these The Very Collection Tie Waist Smart Trousers in a Dark Brown to go with this New Look Knitted Jumper, as the shades of brown are so close to each other, but the textures are very different. To break up the middle, I picked out this Mango Leather Belt, so that it feels a bit more cohesive. I love how they all look together.

I think the main star of this Poetcore outfit is actually the layering piece, which is this Friends Like These Neutral Longline Trench Coat. I’m a big fan of trench coats, and this one looked perfect. It had the right vibe that I was going for, the right colour to complement the dark chestnut browns, and a bit of a Parisian feel to it.

Now moving onto the accessories, this is where I had a lot more fun. Loafers are a big part of this theme, so I chose these River Island Suedette Backless Loafers, which happened to be the same shade as the trousers, so it was a perfect match. The gold buckle complemented the belt as well, so that tied together nicely.

For my bag, I wanted a colour and style that would work with the browns, so I chose this Katie Loxton Lori Cross-Body Bag in Cherry Suedette as the deeper burgundy hue was ideal. Plus, it works as a daytime bag as well as a little clutch. I then finished my Poetcore look off with these Monsoon Chocolate Sunglasses to add some mystery, and to really bring it all to life (and add a little bit more of a French, artistic touch), this Accessorize Plain Wool Beret in Black. Which, as it turns out, I absolutely love!

This location in a local Bath village was ideal for these photos too. It’s an old School House from the 1800’s, which suits the historic, academic look of Poetcore. We have a really old-looking bookshop in town as well, with wooden ladders to reach higher-up bookshelves. I’ve included a couple of those photos at the bottom of this blog post, and again, perfect vibes for the aesthetic.
